How do I map a gradual return to work in absence.io?

If someone returns to work gradually after a longer illness, for example with 2, then 4, then 6 and finally 8 hours per day, there are two ways to set this up.

Option 1: Create multiple work schedules

Go to Work Schedules in the person’s profile and click Add. Then create a separate work schedule for each stage of the return. You only enter the Valid from date for each one, and the previous work schedule ends automatically as soon as the next one starts.

For example:

  1. Valid from the start of the gradual return: 2 hours per day
  2. Valid from two weeks later: 4 hours per day
  3. Valid from four weeks after the start: 6 hours per day
  4. Valid from six weeks after the start: the regular work schedule with 8 hours per day again

In each phase, the target hours then match the agreed working time exactly. You can find out how to add a new work schedule here.

Option 2: Keep the work schedule and enter hourly sick leave

The person keeps their regular work schedule, for example with 8 hours per day. You enter the hours they aren’t working yet as an absence of the leave type sick leave. For this, the Hourly leave (minimum 15 minutes) Toggle must be activated in the leave type.

For example:

  • First two weeks: 6 hours of sick leave per day (2 hours of work)
  • Second two weeks: 4 hours of sick leave per day (4 hours of work)
  • Third two weeks: 2 hours of sick leave per day (6 hours of work)

This way, the person still reaches their daily target, and you can evaluate the gradual return later under Reports > Absence days.
