Electronic Sick Leave Certificate (eAU)

It has been announced for quite some time, and since mid-2022, it has finally become reality in germany – the electronic sick note (eAU)!

This means that employees no longer need to submit their certificate of incapacity for work to their employer. Instead, once an employee reports sick, the employer is responsible for requesting the certificate directly from the employee's health insurance provider. While the exact process is still being refined, one thing is clear:

For absence.io users, the introduction of the electronic sick note is no problem at all. Just as before, the eAU can easily be stored within the employee's absence record and is therefore available directly in the employee profile.

The only change compared to the previous process is that the employee no longer uploads the certificate themselves. Instead, the HR department (or the person responsible for handling sick leave) can upload the document directly after requesting it from the health insurance provider.

How does it work?

Simply open the sickness absence entry and click Upload document.

Using the upload assistant, you can attach one or multiple documents to this absence entry – simply drag and drop your files or select them using the file explorer.

Finally, click the "Proof submitted" button. This lets the system know that the required certificate has been provided, so no further reminders will be sent. Your electronic sick leave certificate is now securely stored.

You can access these documents at any time to review or download them. They are stored in the employee profile under Documents → Absences → Sickness.

Alternatively, you can filter sickness absences via the Absences tab and review submitted certificates there as well.

So there's no need to worry about the new electronic sick leave certificate – with absence.io, the process remains as simple and intuitive as ever.
